Product Description

450 grams front / 622 grams rear (20/24 spoke count)

Weight weenie, Mountain goat, Angel of the climbs. . . you know who you are. When the road tilts upwards you can't help but get to the front and push the pace. You want a wheelset to compliment your riding style. The 24mm tubular is the ultimate climbing wheel. With a rim weight of just 280 grams, this is just what you need when the road tilts upward. This wheelset
just barely passes the 1,050 gram mark making it one of the lightest wheelsets on the market today.

With all Boyd Cycling carbon wheels, Sapim CX Ray spokes are standard, and the wheels come with 20 spokes on the front and 24 spokes on the rear.
As with all carbon rims, the use of carbon specific brake pads is very highly recommended. Use of non-carbon brake pads can damage the rims and will void the warranty. Swisstop brake pads are available for purchase with this wheelset for a reduced price with no added cost for shipping.

* About weight limits. Weight limit really depends on the type of riding you are doing as well as the terrain. A rider in Florida is going to have different stresses on a wheel than somebody using the wheels in the mountains of California. We put these numbers out as guidelines, they are not strict limits. Depending on your riding style the weight limit may be different than what we have listed.  If you have any questions about weight limit please feel free to contact us.

  1. great for small riders, climbing, and twisty crits

Posted by Unknown on 28th Mar 2012

I'm a 122lb cat 2 racer. Yeah, raw power isn't my thing but I have busted spokes with what power I can put out on HED Ardennes wheels. I've been trying deep wheels vs. feathery light wheels in all sorts of races to see how things work out for feather weight guys like me. My four baselines are 60mm Jet 6, 60mm Stinger 6, 46mm Stinger 4 and the Boyd 24mm shallow and light wheels.

First off my Boyd 24mm wheels did not come in at 1050g or they would get 5 stars. They weighed in at 1140g, I'm an engineer so I know how to weigh things and have very accurate scales at work. That said they are light enough and you will not find much lighter wheels anywhere.

Hands down on windy days in the mountains the 24mm are the best. Not only for going up but also for going down because I don't have to slow down as much due to the wind moving me around on the 24mm going 45+mph.

For me, I find that all around I'm preferring the 24mm Boyd wheels over my aero wheels because of that little extra punch I get from their lightness. I'm not going to power away from anyone on the flats solo but on a punchy roller these wheels rock. Aero may trump weight on paper over long distances but when you are trying to pry open a minimal gap uphill or try a quick bridge attempt up a hill the lighter weight feels a hell of a lot better!! BANG and your off.

In very twisty crits were you are accelerating all the time these wheels also perform better for me and I don't notice them at all like I do with the heavier more aero wheels.

If you are a feather weight and like to punch it on the hills these are the wheels for you. I can also afford to crash them which I have done twice this year and the wheels have held up well. After a rider slide out in a corner and put his front wheel into my rear at 30+mph and I ended up in the bushes the wheel only required some slight truing.

On a mostly flat course with fast open corners and long straights Aero is still better.

Good product at a great price.
