Product Description

690 grams front / 847 grams rear (24/28 spoke option)

The 50mm carbon clincher wheelset is one that does everything well. We like to tell people that if you need one wheelset for all your rides, the 50mm is the set for you. It's light enough to be a climbing wheel, aero enough to use in road races and criteriums, and because of it's mid-range depth, the 50mm can even be used in strong crosswinds. Because of all these great features, the 50mm carbon clincher is our most popular wheelset!
With all Boyd Cycling carbon wheels, Sapim CX Ray spokes are standard, and the wheels come with 20 spokes on the front and 24 spokes on the rear.
As with all carbon rims, the use of carbon specific brake pads is very highly recommended. Use of non-carbon brake pads can damage the rims and will void the warranty. Manufacturer approved brake pads come free with the wheelset and must be used with the carbon clincher wheelsets.

* About weight limits and spoke counts. Weight limit really depends on the type of riding you are doing as well as the terrain. A rider in Florida is going to have different stresses on a wheel than somebody using the wheels in the mountains of California. We put these numbers out as guidelines, they are not strict limits. Depending on your riding style the weight limit may be different than what we have listed. For spoke count, we recommend if you are close to the point of going with the higher spoke count and really want to increase the durability of the wheels then go ahead and get the higher spoke count. As you can see the weight difference is very small, adding 44 grams to make a more durable wheelset will be worth it. If you have any questions about weight limit or spoke count please feel free to contact us.

A lot of attention is being placed lately on carbon clinchers and descending. Because of the nature of carbon, heat build up is not dissipated as fast as with alloy wheels. This is usually not a problem unless you live in a very hilly area and descend a lot of steep hills where you have to be hard on the brakes for a prolonged period of time. The brake pads we supply were developed by the rim manufacturer to work in unison with the carbon rim. There is an epoxy on the braking surface that prevents heat build up when used with the proper brake pads, this is why you MUST use the brake pads we supply with the carbon clinchers. If you live in a very hilly area, using modulation while braking is also encouraged. Rather than riding the brakes the whole way down the hill, use them for smaller periods of time and adjust your speed incrementally. By doing this you can ride in a very hilly terrain and still be perfectly fine to ride carbon clinchers. If your ride includes very steep descents (long periods of over 10% downhill) where you will have to ride the brakes very hard for a prolonged period of time, carbon clinchers may not be the best idea for that ride.

  2. Awesome Wheelset!!

Posted by Jason Sinke on 1st Nov 2011

I purchased this wheelset back in August and received them in time for a race I had. I was able to ride with them a few days prior to racing and noticed a huge difference. On race day I was able to shave over 5 minutes off of my time from the previous year! Boyd makes an excellent product! Thank you!

  3. My new daily wheels

Posted by Arthur Orton on 24th Oct 2011

These wheels replaced the Shimano WHR-500s that came on my Cervelo S1 and have made it feel like a whole new bike! Boyd gave great advice and helped me pick the 24/28 spoke count build (I'm 190 lbs) before it was even available as an option on the site. He didn't have the rims in stock at the time, but I really respect a business that can advise me on what's better for my needs, rather than just selling me what's on hand. It was worth the wait! The ride has become more comfortable, while the wheel lateral stiffness is much improved. The bike wants to fly! Accelerating feels much faster and simply more fun. I've ridden them over some pretty rough pavement and they're still true (~400 miles so far). I rode them in 30+ mph gusting winds at the Seagull Century this year and was not at any sort of disadvantage relative to those on shallow aluminum rims. They really can be used every day. As other reviewers have said, keep up the great work. Boyd Cycling makes a fantastic product at a great price.

  4. Brilliant all-purpose wheel set

Posted by Abe Lumbshibosk on 12th Sep 2011

First, you should know that I don't treat my cycling gear like fine crystal -- I put it through the ringer. These wheels are able to take the worst of the worst, and come through with flying colors. I outfitted a Pegoretti Marcelo with these wheels for the famous "Baller's Ride" in Virginia this year, and after miles of beastly gravel ascents and descents of Forest Service roads at high speed, the wheels are STILL as true as the day I got them! A wheel that can handle that can handle anything. Highly recommended, without reservation.

  5. Great wheels

Posted by Unknown on 10th Sep 2011

These arrived true and were shipped very professionally. After 1000+ miles, they have remained true (175lbs riding on moderate to rough roads). They also soften the ride on my Blue AC1 to the point that it rides better than my previous round tube bike. Plus, Boyd and Nicole were very informative in helping me with choosing the proper wheel. GREAT product, keep up the good work.
