Altamont Lites – Bullet proof lightweight all around wheel set
A grilled chicken sandwich and a session beer are also very good. So, for those of us trying to save a little weight, the Altamont Lite is the answer. Same great wheel as the Altamont with just 5 mm less depth and 90 grams less weight. Same tire fitments, same welded and ground seams. Same extra deep anodization. Same hand craftsmanship. Same Boyd performance.

TUBELESS

The Altamont Lite features a new tubeless rim bed profile with a bead locking shape. Run tubeless road wheels at high pressures, or even cross tubeless clinchers at low pressures. The rim bed is designed to lock the tire beads into place and prevent burping the tire. The wide center channel allows for side by side bead mounting (not stacked like with a narrow rounded center channel). This makes for much easier mounting and inflation; no more breaking tire levers and relying on an air compressor for inflation!!

Of course, clincher tube and tire systems work perfectly with the new Altamont Lites. If you are not running tubeless, your favorite tire can still be used flawlessly.
Adding the Tubeless Kit: The tubeless kit above will include our new (blue) tubeless tape and tubeless valves pre-installed on the wheels! We will install two layers of the tubeless tape in the exact width you need for your wheels. We will also include and install two of our tubeless valves in the exact length needed for your wheels. Take the guess work out of converting to tubeless and let us do it for you.
Note: you will still need a tubeless specific tire and sealant to run the wheels as a tubeless system.

RIM SHAPE

The inside width of the rim gets a bit wider for 2016 and now sits at 19.86mm. This increase in width allows for a much better tire shape. The better tire shape improves handling, aerodynamics, and vibration dampening due to increased air volume. The new rims were specifically designed around a 25mm tire. Of course, 23mm tires all the way up to cross tires work incredibly well with the new Altamont Lites.

WELDED SEAM

New for 2016 we have changed to a welded seam on the Altamont and Altamont Lite. The welded seam makes for an extremely strong connection where the rim joins itself. It also provides very smooth and consistent braking without any seam hitting the brake pads. Welded seams helps to make the strongest possible rim.

BEAD BLASTED FINISH

It's more than just a cosmetic finish (although it does look very cool!). The rims go through a round of bead blasting before getting anodized. This allows more anodization to seep into the rim, which helps to create a stronger and stiffer rim. This gives a sleek matte finish with an extra layer of strength for each rim.

UPDATED GRAPHICS

The past couple years we have been laser etching the logos on the Altamont. While laser etching certainly does give a unique finish, we were limited to only an off white metallic color. We now have a water transfer decal, baked into the rim. We are able to offer a nice mix of pop and stealth to the new Altamonts. Light gray (semi stealth) logos display on the side of each rim, with a white, newly revised, Altamont logo at the valve. Lets face it, looking good is half the battle and so having a wheelset that performs and looks great was definitely a priority.

  1. Rim is next to bomb proof where other rims have failed to meet this classification by suggestion of local bike shop mechanics. I chalk this up to the great build quality and attention to details during the build process by the more hands on approach to the wheel building process Boyd has put in place. This wheel set (both front and rear) has held up to being thrown around during travel, gravel roads (with 25mm road tires), harsh winter roads in the Midwest, and a 30 mile broken spoke ride with the only adjustment needing to get home was to open the rear brake rim brake caliper. Once the spoke was replaced within a week, it only needed a minor truing and the wheel was back ready to rock.

  2. Can not say enough about Altamont lite wheels handle great roll really well. I weigh 175lbs and wheels are stiff. One note I put these wheels on a lemond Arreeve I wanted to use 25mm tires but when installed it was more like 26-27mm wide, did not have enough clearance so I had to buy another set of 23mm continental 4000 which when on rim are just slightly wider than the rim which is perfect. When I bought the wheels from my local bike shop it had shimano which I needed campy 11 speed. Called Boyd, the person that answered the phone was nice and shipped new axle and hub at no cost. The wheels were 2016 model but brand new. Boyd has great customer service top notch I don’t think you will be disappointed. I also have a older carbon set which I like but for everyday use I prefer alloy. If you don’t like loud hubs buy Boyd hub greese that will quiet them down a lot. For some reason the alloy wheel free hub is not as loud as my carbon Boyd which I like. Thanks hope to buy new set of carbon next year for my Raleigh.
    These rims replaced a 2007 mavic ksyrium sl, the altamonts are way superior in every way. Love them for climbing and all conditions I have about 200 miles on them and are true as the day I purchased them.
