What goes into making the worlds best alloy gravel wheels?
We start in our in-house aluminum rim facility in Greenville, SC. The CCC rim extrusion arrives treated to T6 levels for added strength and quality. Every step of the process is checked and QCed to ensure that every single rim is the best one we've made.
From there, the rims travel to our headquarters in Landrum, SC. There, we have one of the largest and highest quality wheel building facilities in the country. Every rim gets laced into a wheel along 5 different station, each one with a quality check built in.
By the time the CCC wheels reach you as a customer, 11 people operating 9 different work centers have all had a chance to form, join, drill, anodize, lace, build, and ship . . .all within an hour of each other. It's the perfect blend of materials, processes, people, and systems coming together.
And it happens dozens of time every day!
THE NAME: CCC
The CCC, a name engrained in history as the wooded roads it represents, borrows its moniker from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a voluntary public unemployment program designed to provide jobs for young men and to help families who faced challenges finding jobs during the Great Depression. In the mountains of South Carolina there are remnants of “Old CCC” roads deep in the woods that have become favorite exploration destinations for Boyd Johnson, founder of Boyd Cycling.
“Going way off the beaten path and onto roadbeds that haven’t been active for decades is some of the most fun I’ve had on a bike,” said Johnson. “I’ve come across old moonshine distilleries and people on 4-wheelers, but never any traffic. Going that remote means the durability of the equipment is a must.”
The CCC is a wheelset that can handle rugged off-road terrain, while still performing on pavement sections. The alloy gravel-specific rim is 26mm internal and has a 2.8mm offset. It features smaller .7mm hooks (compared to most standard 1.1mm hooks) with increased thickness on the hook walls (1.35mm) for better impact protection while running lower pressures.
