Rims

  • What is the difference between the Prologue and Podium rims?

The Podium rims are found on our higher end wheels. They have features such as variable thickness on the rim bed to make for lower weight, offset rim beds for better spoke tension balance, and the laser cut brake track on the carbon rim brake.

On the alloy side, both the Prologue and Podium rims are made in our Greenville, SC alloy rim facility. The Prologue alloy rims have some clever automations built in to allow for much faster production and lower production costs. The Podium level alloy wheels are sandblasted after being formed into a rim, anodized after sandblasting, and feature water transfer decals for an ultra premium finish.

  • Can I run tubes and tires on a tubeless rim bed?

Yes! All rims feature a tubeless rim bed, and will come with tubeless tape installed. However, the tubeless tape works great as a rim strip if you are running inner tubes. So whether you're all in on tubeless or prefer to run inner tubes, you are free to do so?

  • Are the rims hooked or hookless?

The road rims that we produce (meant for tires under 30mm and pressures above 65PSI) feature a hooked rim profile to securely hold the tire in place.
The gravel and MTB rims we produce usually will never see tire pressures above 40PSI. With this, there is nowhere near enough force on the tire to cause a tire blowoff. Boyd Cycling was one of the first wheel companies to introduce hookless wheels for MTB in 2015. Currently all carbon gravel and MTB rims feature a hookless profile.
Want to know more about hookless? Check out our Hookless specific info page here: Hooked vs. Hookless

  • Why are the rims shaped differently on one side versus the other?

That is because of our offset rim design. Boyd Cycling designs the rims to be part of a complete wheel system. The offset rim bed design helps to make a better responding and more durable wheelset.

Bearings

What bearings are used?

The Podium series uses the Enduro Abec-5 bearings with the LLU/LLB seals
The Prologue series used Abec-3 bearings from S&S

What is the XD-15 ceramic bearing upgrade?

For those looking to get the absolute best performance from your wheels, the Enduro XD-15 ceramic bearings are the pinnacle of bearings. They feature a lifetime warranty, and the bearings actually polish the race as you use them. These bearings will ensure the wheels have the absolute best performance.

What if I need to replace the bearings?

Over the course of the life of the wheels, bearings may need to be replaced. We use sealed cartridge bearings, which means with the proper bearing extractors and press its very easy to remove your current bearings and replace them with brand new ones. Most bike shops have the bearing tools on hand.

Spokes

What spokes are used?

We use spokes and nipples from Pillar spoke.

The Podium series uses a combination of Wing 20 and Wing 21 spokes. The Prologue series uses the TB2018 and the XR1424 spokes.

What if I break a spoke?

While broken spokes are extremely rare thanks to the reinforce elbow on the Pillar spokes, the spokes are a standard 14 gauge J-bend spoke. If you ever needed to replace a spoke, you would not need the exact same model that came on the wheels, any 14 gauge j-bend spoke will get you up and running in a matter of minutes.

Maintenance

What maintenance do I need to perform?

The best maintenance on the wheels is going to be keeping your hubs cleaned and regreased. We have a video that shows how to do this here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4yq9RkHFrE

What is the best way to clean the wheels?

Rubbing alcohol and a clean rag work great. Try to avoid using any degreasers as there could be a risk of the degreaser going into the bearings and causing them to prematurely wear out.

Shipping

How much is shipping?

The website will calculate shipping for you on an order. For reference, for the domestic USA, shipping a wheelset is just $30

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, if you enter your address the website will calculate the shipping rates for you. Boyd Cycling ships throughout the world.

Warranty

What is the warranty on wheels?

The detailed warranty page is listed here
https://boyd-cycling.odoo.com/repairs-and-warranty

If I bought wheels second hand is there a warranty?

While the warranty on the wheels extends only to the original owner, we will always help to take care of any customer who has a set of our wheels. Whether that is in the form of a discounted repair, a crash replacement, or a trade in program, you are always covered. . .no matter the age of the wheels or where you bought them.

Crash Replacement

If I damaged the wheels but it wasn't a crash, am I covered?

Yes, the "crash replacement" does not mean you have the crash in order to get help. Whether you did take a tumble, hit the wheels in a massive pothole, or ran over them with your car (we won't judge), the crash replacement is always available.

Is the crash replacement only available for original owners?

No, the crash replacement is available for anyone who owns a set of Boyd Cycling wheels. Please note that depending on the age of the wheels and the availability of parts, the crash replacement would be best served with the trade in program.

Trade-in Program

What is the trade in program?

Simply put, if you have any model of Boyd Cycling wheels; any age, any condition; no matter where you bought them, you can always trade them in and receive 20% off a brand new set. This program is always available and never expires.

Do I need to send in the wheels first?

No, we will send you the brand new wheels (so you can keep riding). Once the new wheels arrive, use the box to pack up the old wheels and ship them back to us.

Older Model Wheels

I have a 10 speed hub, can I upgrade it to 11 speed?

At this point, we no longer have parts available to convert older model hubs (from 2014) to 11 speed. The best option would be to run a Shimano HG800 cassette which is an 11-34 cassette that fits on a 10 speed freehub body. Note, you will need a medium cage rear derailleur for this to work.

Is there a way to tell how old my wheels are?

Check out this image. Based on your hubs you can tell the approximate age of your wheels. For wheels 2018+ we have the parts available for the hubs.
