“After a month of 1800–2000 watt sprints, these feel stiffer than my 55mm wheels. Zero hesitation.”
— Ben Renkema

The 36 Road Disc SL wheels deliver a balanced ride feel and confident handling, resulting in a lightweight performance wheelset that weighs just 1130g, making it an exceptionally light disc brake carbon wheelset built for everyday road riding.

This rim features a hooked rim bed because it is designed for road/allroad use. With the higher pressures used for those tires having a hooked rim more securely holds the tire in place in the event of hitting a pothole or extreme forces of cornering and sprinting.

Boyd Cycling 36 Road Disc SL

Ultra-Light Disc Brake Carbon Road Wheels (1130g)

Built light. Built right.

The 36 Road Disc SL wheelset is engineered from carbon ply through final spoke tension to deliver ultra-low weight with the stability, durability, and serviceability you expect from Boyd

What it takes to go this light

As a sprinter who consistently pops out 1800–2000 watts for fun, I usually gravitate toward durable, ultra-stable wheels—not featherweight climber sets. So when I first got the new 36mm disc wheels at just 1100 grams, I was sure they’d feel flimsy and unsettled under real power. I couldn’t have been more wrong

Cutting grams is easy. Cutting grams without cutting corners is the work. Here’s what’s actually involved.

  • Targets first

We set goals for stiffness, impact resistance, fatigue life, and serviceability — then we chase weight after those boxes are checked.

  • Rim architecture

The rim’s strength comes from shape, not just material. Spoke bed structure, bead walls, and local reinforcement are designed to handle tension and real-world hits.

  • Layup strategy

Every carbon ply has a job. We use fiber orientation and placement to put material where loads live — and remove it where it doesn’t. Aerospace grade carbon fiber is used in strategic areas to increase strength and impact resistance while allowing the weights to be minimized.

  • Dimensional control + QC

We inspect bead seat, ERD, and critical interfaces so every build starts true and stays that way.

  • Spoke and tension plan

Ultra-light wheels require disciplined tension strategy. We choose spokes for long-term stability — not just the lightest spec sheet. We choose nipples that help keep your wheels running true, yet allow for easy adjustment if you ever need.

  • Handbuilt, stress-relieved, re-tensioned

The build process matters as much as the parts. We use multiple tension cycles, stress relief, and final balance checks. Your wheels will remain running true.

  • Validation

Impact testing, fatigue testing, tire pressure testing. . . over and over again. Plus real riding on rough pavement/real gravel — because spreadsheets don’t win races.

  • Final inspection

Runout, dish, tension balance, hub function, and tubeless setup check — then it ships.

Carbon Rims

Every cut and ply of carbon plays a story in how a rim responds. Aerospace grade carbon is used in strategic places for increased strength with bringing the rim weight down to just 310 grams

Grade 54 Hubs

The new Grade 54 hubs are the most advanced hubs we've ever created. Weighing just 270 grams for the set, the hubs feature a ratchet drive system with 54 teeth and just 6.6 degrees of engagement

Enduro Bearings

The Enduro ABEC 5 bearings provide exceptional precision and durability, ensuring that the hub operates smoothly under the most demanding conditions.

Handbuilt

Every wheel goes through 5 different work centers, before being QCed for true, run out, and spoke tension. This ensures every wheel will keep running as true as the day you received them.

Grade 54 hubs

Featured in the Podium level wheels is the Grade 54 hubs featuring a straight pull flange, high strength steel ratchet with 54 teeth giving 6.6 degrees of engagement, and the low weight to help you fly up the steepest of hills.

Key features of the Grade 54 hubs include

  • 54t ratchet hub wheelset
  • 6.6 degree engagement hubs
  • Enduro ABEC 5 LLU/LLB bearings
  • Centerlock disc brake rotor mounting
  • Quick swap freehub wheelset
  • Tool-free service and parts swapping
  • 7075-T6 aluminum alloy axles
  • Multiple drivers available
  • Forged and CNC’d 6061-T6 heat-treated aluminum hub shell
